Teachers at WRB Elementary School are working through their third year of lesson study. Lesson study is a Japanese based professional development program that focuses on the systematic examination of instructional practices and student learning. Teams of teachers collaboratively research and plan a lesson. One teacher volunteers to teach the lesson while team members observe students to collect data on intended learning. Teams then analyze the collected data, reflect on their lesson, and revise the lesson to increase student learning. A new teacher volunteers to teach the revised lesson while data is again collected for analysis. Teachers have found that the benefit of lesson study is the collaborative examination of lesson planning and instructional practice. This has had a large impact on teaching, and intended student learning, within their classrooms. Comments are closed.
