Reading Buddies began as a parent suggestion, and blossomed into a diverse group of about 10 students who responded to an invitation to help out 1st grade students with reading after school. Since the Postlethwait day ends so early, the Reading Buddies are able to walk over to Frear on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and read to small groups until they end of the their school day. While the Buddies predominantly read, they have also conducted science labs, helped build social studies background, and assisted with the Chinese New Year Celebration. The seventh graders at Dover Air Base Middle School recently completed a text based performance task about the National Park System. To culminate the lesson, Mr. Glenn Stubbalo of the Delaware State Park Service entertained the group with an informative and interactive presentation. Students were able to showcase all they learned from the sources they read by competing for NPS "swag" in a trivia contest. Mr. Stubbalo informed the students about places to visit in Delaware and how to be a conservationist.
