Students participating in the elementary Gifted Education and Enrichment Program visited Coverdale Farm to participate in a farm to table cooking demonstration. This trip is part of their year long study around "Food Production" that will be culminated with students creating their own self-sustaining food system. Teachers at WRB Elementary School are working through their third year of lesson study. Lesson study is a Japanese based professional development program that focuses on the systematic examination of instructional practices and student learning. Teams of teachers collaboratively research and plan a lesson. One teacher volunteers to teach the lesson while team members observe students to collect data on intended learning. Teams then analyze the collected data, reflect on their lesson, and revise the lesson to increase student learning. A new teacher volunteers to teach the revised lesson while data is again collected for analysis. Teachers have found that the benefit of lesson study is the collaborative examination of lesson planning and instructional practice. This has had a large impact on teaching, and intended student learning, within their classrooms. Just a few pictures to share the excitement!
Todd Klawinski, Science teacher at Postlethwait Middle School, presented at the 2016 Delaware's Wetlands Conference.
Todd is also serving as our district's teacher leader helping to coordinate a partnership with Children in Nature (CIN).Through this partnership, support will be provided to restore, repair, and complete three outdoor learning environments at W.R. Brown (Rain Garden), Postlethwait (Outdoor Classroom), and Caesar Rodney High School (Living Classroom). Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEEs) linked to the new Next Generation Science Standards will also be created for our teachers and students in grades 4, 8, and 9. Training will be provided to interested teachers as Caesar Rodney becomes the first district in the state to have fully functioning outdoor habitats. How Exciting! TEACH IT FORWARD: Michael Green and Emily VanSickle, High School Social Studies teachers, developed a professional development module that they presented at the Smithsonian's Teach it Forward session on January 30th.
Nelle Cox, Dover Air Base Middle School English Teacher, was invited to to work at Smarter Balanced in Durham, North Carolina. Mrs. Cox spent a week with teachers from all over the country reviewing and writing items.
Have you or any of your colleagues presented to an audience outside the walls of our district? Feel free to share these experiences by emailing Christine at [email protected]. Let's feature all of the amazing things our teachers do both inside and outside of the classroom! Chinese Immersion

As a district we were excited to celebrate not only 100 years in Caesar Rodney, but also 100 days of school this year! Our elementary students looked back in history and discussed how technology has changed over time. Students then thought about what technology will be like in 100 years. and created models of things that will exist in 100 years to help people in the community. Schools will vote on the best model and send it to the District Office. The District Office will create a time capsule to open 100 years from now!
Feedback from students at Allen Frear: “Mrs. Upp, can we do some more inventions some other time? This is awesome!” “I learned out of making these projects that it really makes you work as a team.” “This is just like Ellen’s design challenge!” “I learned that when you work well as a team you can be proud together.” Mrs. Anderson's first grade class at Stokes Elementary changed up the challenge a bit to have the kids design a model of a piece of playground equipment they might have in 100 years and to think about what safety improvements they might have. Most of their safety improvements consisted of the addition of a trampoline! We can't wait to share some of their models in future posts! What did your students do? Please share!
